The Abolitionists American Experience Official Site. Narrator: As the daughter of one of South Carolina's first families, Angelina Grimké lived in almost unimaginable luxury. In the 1. 82. 0s, Charleston's aristocracy was one of the wealthiest societies on earth. But Angelina found it almost unbearable - - an empire of sin. Carol Berkin, Historian: The story goes that each of them in the family had their own personal slave behind them when they ate dinner.

And if the salt and pepper were next to the person sitting next to you, you didn't ask them to pass it. Your slave got it from his slave and gave it to you. There was nothing that you had to do that there wasn't a slave who took care of it for you. Angelina Grimké (Jeanine Serralles): Did you hear last night? Mrs. Grimké (Crystal Cupp): Hear what? Angelina Grimké (Jeanine Serralles): Really?

Mrs. Grimké (Crystal Cupp): Angelina, what are you talking about? Angelina Grimké (Jeanine Serralles): You know! Henry! He whipped John again! Mrs. Grimké (Crystal Cupp): I've told you before, dear - - that's Henry's business. Carol Berkin, Historian: Angelina attacked slavery not in the beginning because she cared about the slaves.

Mrs. Grimké (Crystal Cupp): .. It is Henry's business.

Carol Berkin, Historian: She was really concerned about the fate of their white masters. Mrs. Grimké (Crystal Cupp): I ask you to leave him alone. Angelina Grimké (Jeanine Serralles): He's my brother! Mrs. Grimké (Crystal Cupp): Yes. I know. Carol Berkin, Historian: She believed slavery was a sin and that God would punish people who had slaves. Angelina Grimké (Jeanine Serralles): Mother, it is my duty to bear testimony against .. Mrs. Grimké (Crystal Cupp): Angelina, mind your own business.

Can you do that? Angelina Grimké (Jeanine Serralles): It is my business! And it's your business too! How can you stand in church every week.. Mrs. Grimké (Crystal Cupp): You must let it be! Angelina Grimké (Jeanine Serralles): I can't let it be!

Have you no Christian feelings? Mrs. Grimké (Crystal Cupp): Yes, Angelina, I have Christian feelings, and you are putting them to the test right now.

My soul will be judged by the Lord, and not by you or anyone else. Angelina Grimké (Jeanine Serralles): It is my duty.. Mrs. Grimké (Crystal Cupp): It is not your duty, Angelina!

I am glad - - I suppose - - that you are so diligent about your faith. But leave my soul to me, and Henry's to Henry. Angelina Grimké (Jeanine Serralles): I speak the truth in love. Watch Barbie In A Mermaid Tale Online Fandango. Mrs. Grimké (Crystal Cupp): Enough! Angelina Grimké (Jeanine Serralles): Mother? Mother. Mother, listen to me! Mother! Julie Roy Jeffrey, Historian: Angelina's religious search was tortured, tortured, tortured.

She was more or less on her own as she struggled with very deep and troubling issues about herself and her relationship to God. Narrator: In the fall of 1. Grimké resolved to leave Charleston and the pollutions of slavery, for an uncertain future in the North. Lois Brown, Historian: There's a kind of fearlessness about Angelina Grimké. Women did not strike out, white women did not strike out on their own in this way, and Southern white women certainly did not. This is disobedience to proper society, to the South, to the church. Narrator: Frederick Douglass was alone in a terrifying new world.

A few weeks earlier, the six- year- old had been delivered to his master's home on Maryland's eastern shore, to begin his life as a slave. His first experience of slavery would haunt him to his grave. Frederick Douglass (Richard Brooks, audio): Aunt Hester went out one night, and happened to be absent when the master desired her presence. Overseer (Scott Carter): Bitch!

Aunt Hester (Ingrid Alli): Oh please, please .. Frederick Douglass (Richard Brooks, audio): No words, no tears, no prayers, seemed to move his iron heart.

The louder she screamed, the harder he whipped - - and where the blood ran fastest, there he whipped longest. He would whip to make her scream, and whip to make her hush.

I dared not venture out till long after it was over. It was the bloodstained gate, the entrance to the hell of slavery. Narrator: Frederick Douglass and Angelina Grimké lived at opposite poles of one of the largest slave societies in history.

In the late 1. 82. United States. In the 5.

Revolution, every Northern state had outlawed slavery. It had once seemed likely that it would disappear in the South as well, but no more. The invention of the cotton gin had led to a massive increase in cotton production, making slavery indispensable to both the South and the North. Manisha Sinha, Historian: It's actually quite astounding how deeply entrenched it was in the nation's political and economic life. What is seen as this sort of idiosyncratic, peculiar Southern institution actually had an enormous economic significance in the national economy of the United States. David W. Blight, Historian: Slaves were the single largest financial asset in the entire American economy, worth more than all manufacturing, all railroad, steamship lines, and other transportation systems, put together. The only thing in the American economy worth more as simply a financial asset was the land itself, and no one really quite knows how to value North America.

Narrator: The only voices advocating the abolition of slavery were black. Their frustration was growing, and some of them were becoming more militant, but no one in power was listening.

As of yet, no white Americans could imagine turning millions of dollars worth of slaves into millions of black compatriots. But scattered around the country, a few lonely souls were convinced that slavery was a crime against God and man. And in Boston, one of them was coming to understand that God intended he do something about it. William Lloyd Garrison felt that he was destined to do great things, but he had no idea how to get there. In 1. 82. 8 he was 2. Newburyport. Garrison's father, a seaman and a drunk, had abandoned the family when Garrison was two years old.

Plunged into poverty, Garrison's mother left her children for years on end as she looked for work. But in their time together, she managed to drum a fierce Christian conscience into her son. James Brewer Stewart, Historian: William Lloyd Garrison's religious background was not just a background, it was at the core of who he was. It was an indwelling spirit inside of him that constantly thought about making God's will come into being on this earth.

Top 1. 0 Watch Alternatives To: The Rolex Submariner. The lauded Rolex Submariner is one of the most popular luxury watches in the world. Easily the most popular steel- cased (or otherwise) luxury diving watch, the Rolex Submariner sets the bar in many ways when it comes to timepieces of its type, at its price point. Blogto. Watch has reviewed the Rolex Submariner here, offered a long- term review of the Rolex Submariner No Date watch here, and even compared the Rolex Submariner to its "cousin" watch the Tudor Heritage Black Bay here. With that said, the Rolex Submariner isn't for everyone, and a lot of people who already have a Rolex Submariner still like the genre of high- end steel sports diving watches and are interested in other watches like it.

Let me first say that Rolex as a brand, and the Rolex Submariner as a model, are among the most copied things out there. Not only is there a vast underworld of fake (which we very much recommend against) Rolex watches, there are lots of "lookalike" timepieces out there which merely seek to emulate the look and feel of a Rolex Submariner for the benefit of another brand. Those aren't the types of watches I'll be talking about in this list. Oh, and I'd also like to say that all of the watches included in this top 1. To kick- off a possible new article series, I'd like to list my personal top 1. Rolex Submariner that still exist within the design, quality, and overall luxury pricing of the Rolex Submariner.

Further, I'd like to focus on dive watches that share a few important things in common with the Rolex Submariner. Those things, for our purposes, are 1) available steel or titanium case construction with matching bracelet, 2) high- quality mechanical movement, 3) time- only display (date optional), 4) mostly (or entirely) monochromatic design with dark colored dial, and 5) a sporty design that can be feasibly be dressed up for a more elegant or formal look. Nothing can absolutely replace the Rolex Submariner, and in many ways the Rolex Submariner is the best of its kind when blending price, features, and quality.

Also, Rolex has some of its own "alternatives" to the Submariner which arguably include the Rolex GMT- Master II, Rolex Sea- Dweller 4. Rolex Deepsea Sea- Dweller. I won't mention those below, but you should know about these more "deep- diving" watches that Rolex produces which are technically Submariner alternatives as well (even though they arguably look very similar). Last, I would like to mention a few basic tech specs of the Rolex Submariner to keep in mind. The watch is 4. 0mm wide in 9. L steel, water- resistant to 3. Rolex uses their own in- house- made movement which promise arguably class- leading performance, and the Rolex Submariner's bezel is produced from ceramic.

Current retail price for the steel Rolex Submariner 1. No Date" is $7,5. Rolex Submariner Date 1. Blancpain Fifty Fathoms.

Strengths: 4. 5mm wide and with an in- house movement, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Automatique 5. Blogto. Watch review here) collection has an available steel model with a matching bracelet and black dial that is thematically in the same category at the Rolex Submariner. It is expensive, but it is also well- made and beautiful. How it compares: With a heritage similar to the Rolex Submariner in terms of origin and purpose, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms currently exists a bit higher on the price ladder than the Rolex Submariner, even though it arguably isn't a "better" watch. Watch All Hallows` Eve 2 Online Facebook.

The Fifty Fathoms does have an attractive curved sapphire crystal over the bezel (versus ceramic), and which you prefer is a matter of taste. Blancpain's has a different look that some say is a bit more on the elegant versus "tool watch" side. The Blancpain is also the more original choice with a higher price premium and far fewer of them out there. Price: $1. 4,5. 00. Tudor Heritage Black Bay.

Strengths: Tudor is owned by the same people as Rolex (they are careful to say they are not owned by Rolex), so there is a lot of design and construction carry- over from "the crown" brand. Starting in 2. 01. Tudor Heritage Black Bay (hands- on here) also has an in- house movement along with a handful of interesting design refinements. It is easily one of the best values around when comparing design, construction, and mechanics. How it compares: The Tudor Black Bay is slightly larger than the 4. Rolex Submariner with a 4.

Perhaps the biggest "down- side" is its aluminum bezel insert material versus the Rolex Submariner's more durable ceramic - though you do get more interesting color options in the Heritage Black Bay, such as burgundy red. Solid dial design was historically inspired by the Rolex Submariner, so the differences are only slight, though noticeable.

Price: $3,6. 75. Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean. Strengths: Omega has spent decades refining and honing its Seamaster collection.. At the top of the ladder when it comes to fancy dive watches is the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean, which combines the appeal of a serious diving tool with a good- looking lifestyle product. The Planet Ocean is just sober enough to not look showy, but it certainly has an impressive wrist presence and a lot of very attractive movements today. How it compares: Comparing the Omega Planet Ocean to the Rolex Submariner really depends on the model since Omega makes not only different sizes, but different versions - and that applies even to just the three- hand automatic models (the image above shows the Planet Ocean Master Chronometer). There is no perfect 4.

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean models similar to the Rolex Submariner in terms of features and size. While Rolex still arguably wins when it comes to fit and finishing, Omega is clearly chasing Rolex when it comes to movement performance, dial and case construction, as well as overall popularity. It's certainly worth a close look. Price: Starting at around 5,7.

CHFBulgari Diagono Scuba. Strengths: The newest generation Bulgari Diagono Scuba (a.

Blogto. Watch review here) is the best Diagono diver watch made to date, offering an interesting Italian- theme to the idea of a Rolex Submariner alternative. Built on the Diagono family of watches, you see distinctive design elements such as the hinge- style lugs, bracelet, and dial design, which here is the cleanest we've ever seen it on a Diagono Scuba. It also happens to mix sportiness with elegance very well, just like the Rolex Submariner.

How it Compares: The 4.
